History of Father's Day

The idea for Father's Day originated in the early 1900s with Sonora Dodd, a woman from Spokane, Washington. Dodd's father, William Smart, was a Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own after his wife died. In 1909, Dodd proposed the idea of a national holiday to honor fathers to the Spokane Ministerial Association. The association supported the idea, and the first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane on June 19, 1910.

Father's Day became a national holiday in 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed it into law. The holiday is now celebrated in many countries around the world.
